Tips for Visiting the Great Wall of China

For nearly a decade, Club Newport has served thousands of vacation-goers through a comprehensive array of travel-related services and partnerships with industry leaders like SaveOn Resorts. Travelers with a Club Newport vacation membership gain access to tens of thousands of destinations around the world, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the Great Wall of China.

One of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Great Wall of China has been built, renovated, and added to by Chinese rulers over the course of nearly 2,000 years. Currently, the Great Wall extends for more than 5,000 miles across the country, with sections that rise more than 26‘ high. When visiting this cultural marvel, the Club’s concierge professionals have these tips to offer.

1. Choose the season wisely. Travel experts suggest that spring and fall are the two best seasons to visit the Great Wall. In the spring, temperatures are generally pleasant and the newly blossoming flowers add to the awe-inspiring beauty. The fall, however, boasts clear and crisp weather with colorful autumn leaves that’s also sure to please. To the contrary, summer can be hot and crowded, and winter, while less busy, can sometimes be icy and unpleasant.

2. Pick a section. At more than 5,000 miles, it is impossible to see the entire Wall in one visit. Most travelers opt to visit sections close to Beijing. Besides offering convenient transportation options, these areas are some of the best preserved. The most popular section is Badaling, which showcases parts of the wall built in the 16th century.

3. Schedule a tour. Though travelers can visit the Wall on their own, numerous companies offer guided tours that range from multi-day hiking trips to daylong bus tours hosted by knowledgeable locals.
