Tips for Taking Pets on Flights

Club Newport Vacation Membership helps travelers save money on accommodations and transportation around the globe. Quality hotels, resorts, excursions, car rentals, airfare and more are available through the members-only portal or can be accessed through a highly skilled and resourceful concierge team.

Travel by air is convenient for many people but can be stressful for those who choose or need to travel with pets.

The Club’s expert team of concierge professionals has a few tips for these travelers and their furry friends to help ensure an organized flying experience.

1. Know airline pet travel policies before booking. Most airlines have dedicated site pages that explain their rules on pets. You are most likely to need two things before boarding. A note from the vet confirming your pet is healthy for travel and a travel carrier that does not exceed the size regulations specified by the airline.

2. Be aware of the fees and book in advance. Booking your travel plans ahead of time is important as some airlines only allow a limited number of pets aboard. Fees for bringing pets on a flight typically range from $75 to $125 and are usually charged for each direction of travel.

3. Consider booking an upgraded flight. Since you will require extra space to travel with your pet, it will be more comfortable and relaxing to book a seat with extra legroom. Look for airlines that make traveling with pets more comfortable. For example, American Airlines now offers flights that provide first-class travelers with a pet cabin option, a nook to place their pet carrier that does not interfere with legroom space.
